An Evening for Healers
May 4, 2017

An Evening for Healers set for May 4
7th Year for the LSU Health Sciences Foundation Signature Event

A young father has a second chance at life and a Shreveport toddler has hopes of a bright future thanks to the expert care of LSU Health Shreveport faculty physicians, residents, fellows and students. The community is invited to join these two patients in celebrating the men and women who made it all possible when LSU Health Sciences Foundation hosts the seventh annual An Evening for Healers fundraising event on May 4 at the Shreveport Convention Center.

The event honors physicians and other healthcare professionals, as well as first responders, who provide healing care to patients in the region. This night of celebration also raises funds for LSU Health Shreveport at a time when state funding continues to decrease and external funding is critical to its future. Event Chair Susan Moffitt said, “With more than 70 percent of the practicing physicians in our region either studying or training at LSU Health, support from the community literally strengthens healthcare in the entire area.”

Ray Snow was only miles from home when he wrecked his vehicle in the early hours one October morning. First-responders with the Shreveport Fire Department extricated the young father from the car, but his chances for survival were slim when he arrived at University Health’s Level 1 Trauma Center. For hours, LSU Health doctors worked to stabilize Ray’s condition.

When Ashanti Burks was pregnant with son Christian Starks, a sonogram revealed the child’s jaw was underdeveloped. Since the baby’s condition, known as Pierre Robin, would also cause his airway to be blocked at birth, the doctors meticulously prepared for the child’s delivery. Even with planning, early labor called for an emergency C-section and added pressure to the give the newborn a fighting chance at life.

The details of these remarkable stories will be shared in videos to premiere at the May 4th event. The healers for both patients will receive medals commemorating their life-saving work before a crowd of peers, friends, family and others from the community.

Dr. Ike Muslow and Mr. Donald Zadeck, pioneering leaders of the Health Sciences Center and the LSU Health Foundation, will also be honored as this year’s community heroes.

Muslow served as dean of LSU Health Shreveport’s School of Medicine from 1975 to 1981, from 1990 to 1992, and again from 1996 until his retirement in 2000. Among his significant achievements was the construction of the burn and trauma unit that evolved into today’s Level 1 Trauma Center, as well as the establishment of the LSU Health Sciences Foundation. When the Foundation was created in 1997, Dr. Muslow asked Mr. Zadeck to serve as the first chairman of its Board of Directors, helping the nonprofit support and enhance LSU Health in its many endeavors.

“The leadership and generosity of these two men continue to inspire our community,” Moffitt said.
