Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on September 18th at CenturyTel Center

REGISTATION OPEN ONLINE FOR 16TH ANNUAL RACE FOR THE CURE® TO BE HELD SEPTEMBER 18TH   AT CENTURYTEL CENTER IN BOSSIER CITY, LOUISIANA TO RAISE FUNDS FOR BREAST CANCER AWARENESS AND LOCAL PROGRAMS

 

Registration is now open online at www.komennwla.org  for the 16th annual Northwest Louisiana Susan G. Komen for the Cure Race for the Cure ® which will be held at a new location at the CenturyTel Center in Bossier City, LA on September 18th, 2010. This event is open to men, women, and children of all ages and includes a 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk, and a 5K Co-ed Run/Walk as well as Kids for the Cure® fun activities.  The first 5,000 registered participants will receive a colorful Komen Race for the Cure t-shirt.  Participants unable to make it on race day may register to Sleep In for the Cure®.  Identical to regular registration, Sleep In for the Cure participants will receive their t-shirt and race packet. A breast cancer survivor breakfast snack and commemorative photo opportunity will be available at the CHRISTUS Schumpert Health Systems breast cancer survivor tent prior to the race at 7:00 a.m. especially for breast cancer survivors followed by the breast cancer survivor recognition ceremony at 7:30 a.m. for all. Preceding the race, breast cancer survivors may return to the tent for a served breakfast and special entertainment. The Kids for the Cure® activities sponsored by Steel Forgings will be available at the Kids Corral all morning and each registered child will receive a commemorative medal. The Kids for the Cure activities and registration is open to all children 9 years old and under. 

 

The One-Mile Run/Walk begins at 8:00 a.m., and the 5K Co-ed Run/Walk begins at 8:30 a.m at the CenturyTel Center in Bossier City, LA. A recognition party with entertainment will be held at 9:30 preceding the race. Komen souvenir merchandise will be available for purchase with credit card or cash all morning.

 

Online registration is available at www.komennwla.org  For the first time ever, an “early bird” discount is available with a discounted rate.  Participants registering online will also automatically be entered into a drawing to win one round-trip American Airlines plane ticket to anywhere in the continental United States. The registration fee is

$20 July 1st – August 18th.  It increases to $25 August 19th through September 12th. The week prior to the race, Sept 13th-17th the fee is $30, and on race day, September 18th the fee will be $35.  Kids for the Cure® which includes t-shirt especially designed for the program, is for children 9 years and under and is $10. Timing Chips will be available at Sportspectum and are $5. The in-person registration opportunities will be on August 20th from 6 am to 8 pm, at the intersection of Youree drive and Bert Kouns Industrial drive in front of Porter’s cleaners at the Portico shopping center in Shreveport at an event called Friday in Pink. Also, September 11th and the week of September 13-17th at Sportsspectrum located on the corner of East 70th Street and Fern Avenue in Shreveport. Teams of 10 or more persons can also sign up online, and can access a team packet with a special team member entry form and instructions at www.komennwla.org. Teams registered online must have all members registered by September 10th and if using paper team entry forms, all team member forms must be postmarked by September 3rd. Awards will be received on race day for the largest overall team, largest survivor team, and largest corporate team.

           

The goal of the race is to raise funds toward Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s promise of eradicating breast cancer.  Over seventy-five percent of the net proceeds from the race will fund local breast health education projects and grants.  A minimum of twenty-five percent of the net proceeds from the race goes to the Komen Foundation Award and Research Grant Program and funds ground breaking research.
